About Us

Why We Exist

Earth Standing Still grew out of the frustration many of us felt after the US invaded Iraq. We did everything we thought possible to stop that from happening. At the time, Bush said something like, "I see the protesters. They have no effect on my decision." So it is clear that letter writing, protesting, etc. is not an effective means to influence government, at least not in the United States.

Earth Standing Still exists to make a peaceful, nonviolent, direct impact on society.

What's in a name?

Our name is based on the science fiction movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still". In that movie, the spaceman Klaatu demonstrates his power by shutting down all nonessential machinery on Earth for 30 minutes (correct me if I'm wrong). We are using a similar approach to demonstrate our power to those who (supposedly) serve us in government.

Who We Are

Currently, Earth Standing Still is run by Bob Matlin. You can visit peacelovekindness.org to find out more about what I think. I receive and rely on advice from a few friends who critique the site, help plan events, and so on.
