Our Focus
Earth Standing Still intends to focus on one or two major problems. Why? Because there are too many problems and we cannot possibly create non-action events for them all. We will try to focus on those that seem most fundamentally important.

Nuclear War with Iran

Of all the terrible things the United States could do, the worst would be to use nuclear weapons. Yet this is something the Bush administration is considering doing. Why do we think this is something worth focusing on?
- It has been reported that the administration is reviewing plans for a nuclear strike against Iran. ("Annals of National Security" by Seymour Hersh, The New Yorker, 4/17/2006 issue)
- Planning for the invasion of Iraq started well before the actual invasion took place. ("Text of the Downing Street Memo", from AfterDowningStreet.org. pdf version)
- Before Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq, his administration repeatedly claimed they were pursuing all possible diplomatic options. Based on the above, we know that this was not true. They are now making the same claims regarding Iran. ("Rumsfeld: Iran attack talk in 'fantasy land'", AP, 4/11/2006)
- Due to Iraq, the US military is stretched too thin to invade another country.
- Taken together, it is reasonable to assume that Bush does indeed want to attack Iran and use what he believes to be the only effective means left — nuclear weapons.

If Bush uses nuclear weapons, it is an irreversible act. There is no undoing a nuclear strike. On top of that, it will show the rest of the world that the US is willing to use nuclear weapons. What will China, Russia, and India think about that? And it will free other nations of the responsibility to use them first; any country with nuclear weapons will be justified in their use by our actions.

This is a more long term problem, but all signs are that if we do not start making the necessary changes soon — within a few years — it will be impossible to fix the damage done by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Business cannot possibly be more important than sustaining a livable planet if for no other reason than that business depends on a livable planet.
